Seal Books, Canada's premier mass-market publishing house, was founded in 1977, as a partnership between U.S.-based Bantam Books and McClelland & Stewart. Seal has been headed by various publishers, including Jack McClelland, Anna Porter, Janet Turnbull, and Dean Cooke. During the 1980s it offered the famous Seal First Novel Award.

Although Seal has always published a number of original books, it specializes in reprints of major hardcover titles, with a strong emphasis on fiction. Many Seal books were originally Doubleday Canada hardcovers, but Seal also acquires rights from key Canadian and international publishers. Since the merger with Random House of Canada, Seal has also published mass-market titles from Random House Canada and Knopf Canada.

Seal's world-renowned Canadian authors include Margaret Atwood, Farley Mowat, and Lucy Maud Montgomery. Virtually all of Margaret Atwood's novels are published in beautiful Seal editions, and Lucy Maud Montgomery's heartwarming Anne of Green Gables and Emily novels remain constant bestsellers more than six decades after her death.

Seal's list includes a number of bestselling fiction authors (both Canadian and international) such as Kelley Armstrong, Giles Blunt, Joy Fielding, Diana Gabaldon, P.D. James, Susie Moloney, and Ruth Rendell.

On the non-fiction front Seal has enjoyed stellar success with books such as Stevie Cameron's On The Take and Nick Pron's Lethal Marriage.

Seal thrives on making affordable editions of excellent and entertaining writing available to the widest possible audience.
