Random House of Canada was established in 1944 as the Canadian distributor of Random House Books. In 1986 the company established its own indigenous Canadian publishing program that has become one of the most successful in Canadian history.
As a separate company, Doubleday Canada has been one of Canada's most prominent publishers for over fifty years and Bantam Books Canada had long served as the Canadian distribution arm of Bantam Doubleday Dell (BDD).
Following the international merger of Random House and BDD in 1998, the two companies officially became one in Canada in 1999, representing sister companies' titles in this country and maintaining thriving Canadian publishing programs.
In the last few years as a united company, Random House of Canada titles have won numerous awards, including the Giller Prize, the Governor General's Literary Award, the Booker Prize, the Commonwealth Writers Prize, the Whitbread Book of the Year Award, the James Beard Award, the National Business Book Award, and the Canadian Booksellers Association Libris Awards for Publisher of the Year, Editor of the Year, Author of the Year and Fiction and Non-Fiction Book of the Year.
