Dear BookLounge Member,

A new trilogy of books has been making waves with Canadian readers. It is called the Fifty Shades trilogy and the first book is Fifty Shades of Grey. These books feature a tension-filled love story at their heart, which is what drew me to it, and what I believe has so many of us staying up late reading, unable to stop turning the pages. The nature of the relationship between Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele is quite racy, I should warn you. Mr. Grey has particular erotic tastes and Anastasia soon finds herself drawn into situations she can’t believe she enjoys. The books are available as e-books and print. Through very informal polling, I have yet to meet anyone who has started reading this and chooses to stop. I’d be interested to hear what you think…

Happy Reading,
Tracey

The Book of Fame

I signed on with the Lloyd Jones fan club after reading his breath-stealing novel Mister Pip.
I’ve waded in his writing ever since, more or less to the same level of enjoyment. Until I read
The Book of Fame. The novel is based on actual events (a team of New Zealanders tour the UK in 1905), but it is not history. It involves a sport (said team—the “All-Blacks”—play rugby) but requires no expertise in scrums and touches and wingbacks.

The Virtual Self

Meet Nicholas Felton. Nicholas is a graphic artist and information designer based in New York City. He’s also a self-tracker. I’ve only spoken to Nicholas a couple of times, once for my radio show, Spark, and once while researching this book. Nonetheless, I know a lot about him. In 2008, Nicholas walked an average of 3.13 miles per day. That same year, he bought five items of clothing from China, and only one from Canada (I’d put money on it being a Canada Goose parka). During those twelve months, he went to one poker night, but visited a museum seven times. I know all this because since 2005 Nicholas has been publishing The Feltron Annual Report, a compendium of statistical minutiae about his daily life, displayed in the kind of eye-candy graphics you’d expect from a New York designer. Besides being lovely, it’s surprisingly revelatory. I mean, it says something about a guy that he goes to museums seven times as often as he plays poker.

The funny thing is, The Feltron Annual Report is actually quite popular, and by that I mean popular with people besides Nicholas Felton.

Learning to Love the Loop: The Power of Habit

Some months ago in this space I wrote about Thinking, Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahnemann. Charles Duhigg’s new revelatory volume,
The Power of Habit is a perfect companion piece, though I should advise that reading these books can be disturbing. Reading them too close together might constitute an overdose of self-examination.
